A Study of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Beauty artists

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out knowledge and preventive behaviors the status of, the work-related
musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) found in Korean beauty artists(hair designers, skin-care specialists, make-up artists).

Method : From March 1 to May 31 in 2003, five hundred and eighty three workers who live in Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju and Busan were selected and interviewed with questionnaires which were designed to colled information about their workplace factors and individual factors on WMSDs.

Results : In relation to the individual factors, the female workers with no delivery experience(inc1uding the unmarried) reported pain in the shoulders and the waist, the younger workers reported pain in the ankles and the waist. Workers with longer service hours per day reported more severe pain in the wrists, and workers with awkward postures reported severe pain in the neck and shoulders, together with some pain in the waist, wrists, knees and ankles. Workers with more-than-10-hour standing service reported pain in the shoulders, waist, knees, ankles and wrists. The workers who were dissatisfied with the amount of rest time reported the most severe pain in the neck, wrists, ankles and severe pain in the shoulders, waist and knees.

Conclusion : we need to consider the inner mental approach for the development of the Personal Defence
Acquisition Program which may improve the mental immune system against WMSDs.
